1. Purpose
Specifications, plans, procedures, datasheets and customer documents guide what people build and what customers rely on. If two versions are in use, or nobody can tell which is approved, people build the wrong thing and customers design to the wrong numbers. This procedure makes the current approved version of every controlled document clear, and keeps obsolete versions out of use.
It applies the documented information requirements of quality systems such as ISO 9001 and IATF 16949, and links to customer notification for documents that leave the company.
How controlled documents, such as specifications, plans, procedures, datasheets and customer documents, are created, reviewed, approved, versioned, distributed, changed and retired. Readers must always be able to tell which version is current and approved, and obsolete versions must not be used by mistake.
