Writes and maintains the microcode layer that implements complex instructions, exception flows and hardware patches, giving the processor a programmable way to be correct and updatable after tapeout.

Responsibilities

Project

Work done for a product or program.

Implement complex or rarely used instructions in microcode rather than hardwired logic, balancing performance against area savings.
Design and code microcode flows for exception handling, interrupt delivery, mode transitions, virtualisation traps and reset/init sequences.
Co-design the micro-op format, microcode ROM/patch RAM structure and sequencer with the core design team.
Develop microcode patches that work around hardware errata found in silicon, then prove the patch closes the erratum without performance regression.
Validate microcode against the architectural specification using instruction-accurate simulators, random instruction generators and directed tests.
Optimise hot microcode flows to reduce cycle count on performance-relevant paths such as string operations, atomics and privileged transitions.
Maintain the microcode build, assembly and signing toolchain and the release process to production and field update channels.
Work with security teams on microcode-based mitigations for speculative execution and side-channel vulnerabilities.
Document microcode behaviour and constraints for architects, validation teams and errata publication.

Typical backgrounds

BS/MS in Computer Engineering or Computer Science with strong low-level systems and architecture background; 3–15 years, almost always learned inside a CPU vendor since the skill is not taught externally.
