Axcelis breaks ground on an ion implanter factory in Pyeongtaek

Axcelis Technologies has started construction of a manufacturing facility for ion implantation equipment in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province, south of Seoul. The site extends the company's existing Korean base, the Axcelis Asia Operations Center. It will have about 18,600 square metres of floor space, covering warehousing, Class 1,000 and Class 10,000 cleanrooms and a training centre. Axcelis is investing about US$35 million and plans to begin production in the second half of 2028. When the project was first announced in September, chief executive Russell Low described ion implanters as a key front end tool and said the plant would help the company keep pace with global demand. The governor of Gyeonggi Province said the investment strengthens the region's position as a semiconductor hub. Korea is home to two of the world's largest memory makers. The company has not said how many people the plant will employ or how much capacity it adds.
