ams OSRAM joins the Credo led OCP effort on short reach optical links

ams OSRAM has joined the Short Reach Micro Emitter Optics workstream within the Open Compute Project, an effort led by Credo to define interoperable standards for faster and more energy efficient optical links inside AI data centres, where growing GPU clusters are stretching what copper can do. The approach is described as wide and slow: data is spread across many parallel channels running at moderate speed, aiming to give the reach of optics while keeping the latency, bandwidth density and cost profile of copper. A common specification covering signalling, power efficiency, form factors, optical modules and connectors is targeted for approval by the Open Compute Project in 2027. ams OSRAM will contribute microLED and microVCSEL emitter arrays, matching photodiode receivers, CMOS technology and 3D packaging. At ECOC 2026 it also showed an 850 nanometre thin film VCSEL platform on gallium arsenide that works with existing OM3 multimode fibre, which could lower deployment costs, and a multi core fibre connector with BizLink.
