1. Purpose of the gate
The Schematic design review closes the Schematic & Circuit Design stage. Peers review the schematics and their simulation results before full corner and statistical verification starts. The aim is to catch design errors, weak margins and missing considerations while they are cheap to fix, and to confirm the circuit is ready for the effort of full verification and layout.
Unlike a management gate, this is a technical review: experienced designers from outside the immediate team read the schematics and challenge the design choices. The decision is whether the circuit can move into full verification and layout, and with what actions.
The criteria are simulation against the specification, with results shown for every target; a design review held, with actions recorded; and behavioural models available in a first version.
