1. Purpose of the gate
Production release is the last gate of the analog and mixed-signal lifecycle. It closes the Production Test & Qualification stage and allows parts to ship in volume. It is a hand-off point owned by the Product lifecycle: the engineering decision on qualification and production test is taken earlier, at Qualification passed, and this review is where the product team takes the production release decision on that evidence. After it, the product is in production and sustaining, and changes to design, test or process follow the formal change and customer notification processes.
The gate brings together three bodies of evidence that are developed in parallel: the qualification results that show the product is reliable, the production test program that measures and trims every part, and the final datasheet that tells customers what they can rely on. These must agree with each other. A datasheet limit that the test program does not check, and that is not backed by characterisation or design evidence, is a promise without proof.
The criteria are that qualification has passed to the agreed standard, the production test program is released, and the datasheet is final. The first two are confirmed by the Qualification passed decision record rather than argued again here. On the product lifecycle, this gate is the product's production release, and its decision belongs to the product team.
