United Microelectronics Corporation is established as Taiwan's first private chip company
UMC was spun off from the government-backed Industrial Technology Research Institute, becoming Taiwan's first private integrated circuit manufacturer. It later abandoned the integrated device manufacturer model to become a pure-play foundry, helping establish Taiwan as a global chip manufacturing hub.
