Texas Instruments publicly demonstrates the first silicon transistor
At the IRE National Conference in Dayton, Ohio, Gordon Teal announces that Texas Instruments has grown a working silicon transistor — until then, every commercial transistor had used germanium. Silicon's much higher tolerance for heat and its abundance would make it the material the entire industry eventually standardizes on.
