Breaking from Intel's numeric "x86" naming (which competitors couldn't trademark), the Pentium brand gives Intel a name it can legally protect and market directly to consumers, not just PC makers. Superscalar execution lets it run more than one instruction per clock cycle, a first for a mainstream x86 chip.
