The Athlon (codenamed K7) was AMD's first processor built around its own independently developed x86 microarchitecture rather than a licensed Intel design, and it beat Intel's Pentium III in several benchmarks at launch. It's widely seen as the moment AMD became a credible high-end performance rival to Intel.
