TSMC is founded, pioneering the pure-play foundry model
Morris Chang starts Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company on a premise unusual for its time: a fab that only manufactures chips designed by other companies, never competing with its own customers. The pure-play foundry model TSMC establishes here later becomes the structural basis of the fabless industry.
