Quantum well
A thin layer of narrower bandgap material sandwiched between wider bandgap barriers, confining carriers in one dimension so their energy states become discrete and recombination efficiency rises.

Notes
Nearly every modern LED and laser diode uses a multiple quantum well active region rather than a bulk junction.
