Germanium photodetector
A photodiode formed by epitaxially growing germanium on a silicon waveguide, absorbing 1310 and 1550 nm light that silicon is transparent to. It is the standard receive element in silicon photonics because germanium epitaxy is CMOS compatible.

Notes
Germanium epitaxy on silicon carries about four percent lattice mismatch, so dark current and defect control are the key process challenges.
