EAM (Electro-absorption Modulator)
A modulator that varies the absorption of a semiconductor waveguide with applied field, using the Franz-Keldysh or quantum-confined Stark effect, so an electrical signal attenuates the passing light.
It is far shorter than a Mach-Zehnder device.

Notes
Silicon photonics implements it using germanium or SiGe, since pure silicon lacks a usable electro-absorption effect at telecom wavelengths.
