D-mode (Depletion Mode)
A transistor that conducts at zero gate-source voltage and requires a negative bias to turn off. In power conversion a normally-on switch is a hazard at startup, which is why depletion-mode GaN and SiC JFETs are usually cascoded.

Notes
Depletion-mode GaN dies still have the best raw figure of merit, so cascode packaging remains commercially relevant.
