BSI (Backside Illumination)
An image sensor structure in which the wafer is thinned and flipped so light enters through the back of the silicon, reaching the photodiode without passing through the metal stack.
It substantially raises quantum efficiency, especially for small pixels.

Notes
Introduced commercially around 2009 and now universal in smartphone sensors, where pixels are too small to tolerate front-side obstruction.
