ABI (Application Binary Interface)
The binary-level contract between separately compiled components: register use and calling convention, stack alignment, argument and return passing, data layout, name mangling and system call conventions.
Code built to different ABIs cannot be safely linked.

Notes
Hard-float versus soft-float ABI mismatch is the classic embedded linking failure, since both build cleanly but interoperate wrongly.
