In brief

PCI Express 8.0 (in development) is maintained by PCI-SIG (PCI Special Interest Group). The current version is 8.0 (pathfinding / exploration phase). The specification is available to members only.

The next PCIe generation after 7.0, targeting a further doubling to 256 GT/s. PCI-SIG opened the exploration/pathfinding phase in August 2025; a ratified specification and compliance testing aren't expected until 2027-2028, so today's implementers are working from early drafts, not a final document.
