PCI-SIG (PCI Special Interest Group)
PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) is maintained by PCI-SIG (PCI Special Interest Group). The current version is PCI 3.0 (2004) — final revision before PCI Express, dated February 2004. The register lists it as superseded. The specification is available to members only.
The parallel, shared-bus expansion standard that PCI Express was built to replace — every device on the bus shared the same wires and arbitrated for access, which became a hard bandwidth ceiling as peripherals got faster. Effectively retired in mainstream computing by the mid-2000s, though PCI-SIG (the same body behind PCIe) still exists because of it.
