Summary

Engineers the flow, capacity and productivity of the assembly and test factory — line balancing, standard times, tool requirements, layout and automation — so that the same equipment and people produce more at lower cost. Turns the factory into a modelled system rather than a collection of tools.

Responsibilities

Project

Work done for a product or program.

Run line balancing and bottleneck analysis, recommending tool purchases, conversions or shift changes to unlock output.
Design factory layout and material flow for new lines, minimising travel, handling damage risk and cleanroom footprint cost.
Lead automation and material-handling projects including automated guided vehicles, overhead transport, robotic loaders and lights-out cells.
Analyse labour productivity and staffing models by shift, defining headcount requirements against volume scenarios.
Drive cost-per-unit reduction projects through cycle time, yield-loss recovery, consumable usage and overall equipment effectiveness improvement.
Build factory analytics — dashboards for OEE, downtime Pareto, cycle time and throughput — and maintain the data pipelines behind them.
Support capital planning with equipment justification models, payback analysis and ramp-readiness schedules.

Function

Work that keeps the discipline running: methods, tools, suppliers and people.

Build and maintain capacity models by operation, computing tool requirements from standard times, availability, utilisation and product mix.
Establish and validate standard process times and units-per-hour rates for every assembly and test operation.
Model work-in-progress flow and cycle time with discrete-event simulation to test scheduling and buffer policies before implementation.

Typical backgrounds

BS or MS in Industrial Engineering, Operations Research or Manufacturing Engineering; 3–10 years in high-volume electronics manufacturing, ideally in a backend assembly and test factory.
