The high-level design of the airborne electronic hardware: architecture, major blocks, programmable devices, interfaces, power, safety features and component choices, before detailed design.
Architecture Work product in the Avionics and airborne electronics lifecycle
DO-254 expects a conceptual design that is assessed before detailed design. It feeds the preliminary system safety assessment, common cause analysis and qualification plan; without it, safety features are added late and the architecture cannot be checked for common causes.
