1. Purpose and scope
A design that passes validation on carefully built units may still fail on the production line. This stage proves that it will not. Units are built on the production line itself, the production validation test (PVT) build, with production tooling, fixtures, test programs, operators and suppliers, and they are checked against the requirements and against the target yield. The result is reviewed at Production validation complete, the third technical readiness review.
The stage then releases the system for sale. The production software is signed and released with its release notes and software bill of materials. The production bill of materials and the approved vendor list are fixed, the board fabrication data is released for volume, the service and support guide is ready, and product management records the release decision with the certificates in place for each market.
In scope: the PVT build, production test programs and their correlation with validation, supplier qualification, the PVT report, production software release, software bill of materials, production bill of materials, service and support readiness and the release approval. Out of scope: scaling production to forecast demand, which starts at Volume ramp in Field Support, Updates & Sustaining.
