1. Purpose of the gate
Design validation is only meaningful on a design that will not change. If the boards, enclosure or main software change during validation, the results no longer describe what will ship, and tests must be repeated. This gate freezes the design so the design validation build, the DVT build, can be built close to production and tested once.
Freezing the enclosure usually means releasing production tooling, which is slow and costly to change. Freezing the boards means the validation build uses the layout intended for production. The review must therefore be confident that integration issues are fixed in the frozen design, and that the chips, modules and software the system depends on are ready for validation. As a technical readiness review, TR2 confirms the technology is ready, not only the design.
The criteria are: board and enclosure design for the validation build released under change control; tooling for production parts released, or a plan recorded; technology readiness of chips, modules and software confirmed for validation; and open design changes tracked. Gating work products are the system design freeze record, schematics, board layout and fabrication data, the mechanical and thermal design package and the enclosure tooling release. The bill of materials reaches final maturity, architecture issues its final decisions log, integration finalises the issue log, and manufacturing issues the manufacturing test strategy and updates the approved vendor list.
