1. Purpose and scope
First revenue proves a customer will pay. It does not prove the company can supply many customers, on time, at a margin, while it builds its next product. Scale-up is where those things are built. Volume needs working capital for wafers and inventory long before customers pay; more customers need sales coverage and applications support; a single source for wafers, assembly or test becomes a risk the customers themselves will ask about; and a one product company needs a roadmap to stay relevant. The stage is therefore as much about organisation and money as about engineering.
In scope: the growth round or other funding, the financial model and revenue and margin reporting, the design win pipeline, sales and support build-out, supply resilience and the second source assessment, field quality, software maintenance, the company operating plan, the company roadmap and the next product proposal. Out of scope: the full design flow of the next product, which starts a new pass through the lifecycle or a derivative project.
