1. Purpose of the gate
The Scale-up review is where the company looks back at its first product in volume and forward to what it becomes next. By this point the startup lifecycle has done its work: the thesis has been tested, the technology proven, a product qualified and sold, and growth funded. What remains is to decide, with evidence, whether the company is scaling as planned and what it should build and how it should be funded from here.
The board weighs four kinds of evidence. Revenue and margin against plan show whether the business works at volume. The second source assessment and field quality record show whether supply and quality can carry more volume and more customers. The design win pipeline shows where demand is heading. And the company operating plan and lessons learned show whether the organisation can carry a second product while supporting the first. From these the board decides the next product and derivatives, second sourcing and the funding or strategic path.
The gate criteria are revenue and margin reviewed against plan, supply and quality reviewed through the second source assessment and field quality, the roadmap with next product and derivatives decided, and the next round or strategic options decided by the board. The pack describes practice neutrally and gives no investment or financial advice.
