1. Purpose and scope
Architecture for a space part answers two questions at once: what the part does, and what happens to each function when a particle strikes or dose accumulates. Every storage element, memory, clock and control path is assessed for its sensitivity and the consequence of an upset, and each is given a mitigation or a recorded acceptance.
The stage also sets the budgets the design will be held to. Total dose and displacement damage margins are allocated to blocks, derating rules are set for timing, voltage, current and temperature, and a first single-event rate prediction shows whether the mitigation can meet the requirement. The package technology is chosen, because hermeticity, materials and thermal paths depend on it.
