1. Purpose and scope
After release, the product's performance has to hold in volume. RF parameters depend on many inputs: wafer lots, substrate batches, filter revisions, assembly sites and test hardware. Small shifts in any of them can move gain, power or emissions, and a shift that stays inside test limits can still erode margin to a regulatory limit or a customer's own budget. Sustaining keeps watch over these distributions and acts before they become returns.
Changes are a constant of sustaining: a second source for a filter, a new assembly site, a die shrink, a firmware update. Each one is assessed for RF performance, reliability and test, and in radio products also for certification, because a certified module's approvals cover a specific configuration. The stage runs from the volume ramp through periodic sustaining and change reviews until the product moves to end of life.
