1. Purpose of the gate
Technology selected confirms which semiconductor technology each function uses, how many dies the product needs, which foundries supply them, and which design kit version design will start on. The architecture and link budget baselined in the previous stage are frozen here, on the selected technology and its device models. It is an engineering gate with a long tail: wafers, models, cost, supply and reliability all follow from it, and changing it later means redesign.
The gate checks that the choice was made on comparable evidence, that the device models are good enough at the product's frequencies and powers, and that the risks specific to the chosen technologies, such as the failure mechanisms of gallium nitride or the supply position of a compound semiconductor process, are known and owned.
The gate sits at the end of the stage Technology Choice and belongs to the RF engineering track. In one line: The semiconductor technology for each die is chosen, the process design kit version is identified and the device models are judged good enough for design, or the gaps are covered by test structures.
