1. Purpose of the gate
The architecture and link budget baseline is the point after which the radio's structure moves only through change control. The transceiver and front-end architecture, the partitioning between dies, module and customer board, and for arrays the beamforming approach are chosen, and the link budget that splits the system targets into block specifications is baselined as the reference. Because the front-end architecture and the budget depend on the semiconductor technology, they are frozen at Technology selected, once the technology is chosen and its device models are checked. After this gate, a block owner who needs more margin negotiates it through the budget, not by quietly relaxing a target.
The gate is where many expensive mistakes can still be caught cheaply: an off-chip loss assumed away, a blocking case that only closes at typical conditions, or an array calibration effort nobody has planned for.
The gate sits at the end of the stage Architecture & Link Budget and belongs to the RF engineering track. In one line: The radio architecture is chosen and the link budget closes with margin: system targets are split into block-level specifications that each have an owner.
