1. Purpose and scope
In volume manufacturing a single node carries many customers' products at once. A drift in one etch chamber or a contaminated chemical lot can touch every design in the fab, so the discipline of this stage is control: knowing which parameters matter, watching them on every lot, reacting fast and consistently when one moves, and learning from each event so it does not recur.
The stage also has to grow. Wafer starts rise as customer products move from qualification to shipment, more tools and chambers are brought into production, and sometimes the node is copied into a further fab. Each addition must behave like the tools and fab that were qualified. Meanwhile yield engineering keeps working down the defect Pareto until yield and cost reach the mature levels set in the plan.
In scope: the process control plan and inline control plan, production recipes, statistical process control, excursion response, tool matching, reliability monitoring, yield improvement during the ramp, capacity planning and technology transfer. Out of scope: deliberate process changes for cost or performance once the node is mature, which belong to Continuous Improvement & Derivatives.
