1. Purpose of the gate
Technology concept selected is where exploration narrows to a single concept worth defining. The device architecture is chosen, together with the leading options for the modules that make it possible, such as the patterning approach for the tightest layers, the gate and contact scheme, and the interconnect materials. From here, the node is defined around this concept, and changing it later means repeating much of the work.
The gate is about evidence of feasibility, not proof of manufacturability. Reviewers should expect device simulation results calibrated as far as possible to short experiments, module feasibility results for every critical module, an early design-technology co-optimisation study that shows the concept delivers its benefit at block level, and a first view of whether the equipment and materials the concept needs exist or can be developed in time.
The gate criteria are a device architecture choice recorded with its evidence and the rejected options, module feasibility shown for every critical module or a plan to close the gap, and equipment and materials readiness assessed for each new tool and material.
