1. Purpose and scope
Optical parts fail in ways electronics rarely do. Lasers wear out gradually, losing power or efficiency; adhesives and solder holding fibres can creep so coupling falls; moisture can affect some facets and coatings; and detectors and modulators can drift. Qualification must show these effects stay within the ageing allowance the link budget assumed, under the stresses the application expects.
Optoelectronic parts are commonly qualified to published industry practice such as Telcordia GR-468, alongside JEDEC practice for the electronic dies, and customers often add their own requirements. The stage begins when qualification units built on the production flow enter test and ends when the parts are reliability qualified and every failure is analysed.
