1. Purpose of the gate
The volume ramp gate checks that the product can be built at the rate customers will order it. For photonic products the constraints are often alignment throughput, optical test time and laser supply rather than wafer supply, so the gate looks at every step's capacity, not only the fab's.
It also checks that the process is under control: statistical process control on the parameters that move coupled power, reaction plans for when they drift, and a yield baseline against which the ramp is judged.
For co-packaged optics, the ramp of optical engines must also match the ramp of the host packages they go into. A shortfall in either holds up both, so the gate reviews the host product's ramp plan alongside its own.
What done means at this gate: output scales towards forecast demand, with wafer, laser and fibre supply, alignment and test throughput and yield monitored.
The gate opens the Production Ramp & Volume stage, which covers building in volume: wafer supply from the photonic and electronic foundries, laser and fibre supply, assembly throughput, which is often limited by optical alignment, optical test time, yield learning across wafer test, assembly and final test, statistical process control and continuous improvement while demand grows.
