1. Purpose of the gate
Production release is the commitment to sell the product in volume. It brings together everything the product needs to be shipped and supported: the verdict of the system validated review that the link works in customers' systems, conforms to the standards the product claims and works with partner optics and hosts, a qualified design and process, a released production test, released firmware and documents, and a supply chain that can deliver.
It is also the main compliance gate. The product must carry its laser safety classification under IEC 60825 with labels and user information, materials declarations for RoHS and REACH, conflict minerals reporting where required, and its export control classification. Missing any of these can stop shipments even when the engineering is complete.
What done means at this gate: with the system validated at the third technical readiness review and qualification passed, the product is released for volume orders, with production test, firmware and documentation released and its compliance complete.
The gate closes the System Validation stage after System validated (TR3), the engineering verdict on the link. The stage covers proving the link works in the system it was designed for: bit error rate and margin across temperature and supply, interoperability with other vendors' optics and with the electrical interfaces of the host, conformance to the applicable published specifications such as IEEE 802.3 optical PHYs, Optical Internetworking Forum agreements or a module multi-source agreement, module management, laser safety classification under IEC 60825, product compliance declarations, thermal behaviour in the real enclosure and customer qualification.
