1. Purpose of the gate
Support plan review is where the cost and the promise of long-term software support are weighed against each other. Every supported branch, operating system version and toolchain version carried forward costs engineering time, validation rig time and vulnerability monitoring effort. Every one dropped may strand a customer whose products still depend on it. The review exists so these choices are made on evidence, at a regular point, rather than by drift.
The gate criteria are a reviewed field issue trend, an updated and agreed long-term support plan, and customer commitments checked against the plan. The long-term support plan is the gating work product; it draws on the field issue reports and the customer support summary. Unlike most gates, this one recurs: it is held at regular intervals during maintenance, and the last one held before support winds down sets up Final release announced.
No hardware gate in the SoC, AI accelerator, FPGA or automotive lifecycles is directly linked to this review. It should still look across at them: a planned last-time buy, a new silicon stepping or a vehicle program that will run for many more years each change what the support plan must cover. The product lifecycle's Lifecycle review is the natural partner, since it asks the same question for the product as a whole.
