1. Purpose of the gate
The award gate is short but it sets the conditions for everything after it. Its question is whether the organisation is ready to start quality planning properly: is there a named leader with authority, are the disciplines committed, is the timing tied to the customer's real milestones, and does the team know which customer specific requirements apply.
A program that starts without these tends to discover them late: a customer requirement nobody owned, a site that was never asked, a qualification that cannot finish before the approval date. The gate is where management confirms the resources and the leader confirms the plan to plan.
For a chip supplier the award often arrives while the product is still being defined in the product lifecycle and while the safety work of the automotive lifecycle is starting. The gate should name who links the three, so that the mission profile, the special characteristics and the safety requirements are gathered once and shared, rather than collected separately by three teams with three different answers. It should also confirm who speaks to the customer, because a single, consistent voice early on avoids conflicting commitments later.
