Watchdog kick
The periodic write that refreshes a watchdog timer to prove software is still alive; if it stops, the watchdog resets the device. Robust designs kick only after checking that all critical tasks have run, rather than from a timer interrupt.

Notes
Windowed watchdogs reject a kick that is too early as well as too late, catching runaway loops that a simple timeout misses.
