Term · General Industry
Shift left
Moving a verification, validation or quality activity earlier in the development flow so problems are caught when they are cheap to fix. In silicon this usually means running software on emulation or a virtual platform before tape-out rather than waiting for parts.

Notes
Borrowed from software DevOps vocabulary and now standard in SoC programme reviews, where a post-silicon software bug costs orders of magnitude more than a pre-silicon one.
