Fermi level
The energy at which the probability of electron occupancy is one half, used as the reference for where a material's carriers sit relative to its energy bands. Doping shifts it toward one band or the other, and its alignment across a contact sets barrier heights.

Notes
Fermi level pinning at metal contacts is a persistent obstacle to low-resistance contacts on scaled and two-dimensional devices.
