Glossary comparison
MBSE vs SysML: what is the difference?
The difference
SysML is a modelling language. MBSE is the overall approach and set of practices, which can use SysML or other languages and frameworks.
Model-based systems engineering is the practice of using models as the central engineering record. SysML is the most widely used language for that practice, but MBSE also covers methods, tools and processes.
The two terms
MBSE
Model-based systems engineering (MBSE): developing a system from connected models of its requirements, architecture and behaviour, rather than from separate documents, so that changes and their effects can be traced and checked.
SysML
Systems Modeling Language (SysML): a graphical modelling language, maintained by the Object Management Group, for describing a system's requirements, structure, behaviour and constraints.
