IEEE 1500 vs IEEE 1687: what is the difference?
The difference
IEEE 1687 (IJTAG) is about reaching embedded instruments such as BIST engines and sensors through an on-chip network. IEEE 1500 is about isolating a core so it and its surroundings can be tested.
IEEE 1500 wraps a core so it can be tested in isolation. IEEE 1687 connects and operates instruments; a 1500 wrapper can itself be one of the things an IJTAG network reaches.
The two terms
IEEE 1500
The standard that defines a wrapper and a serial control mechanism for embedded cores, allowing each core to be isolated and tested independently within a larger SoC.
IEEE 1687
The standard, known as IJTAG, that defines a reconfigurable scan network and a description language for reaching embedded instruments such as BIST engines and sensors through the JTAG port.
