Automotive Ethernet vs SerDes: what is the difference?
The difference
Automotive SerDes links such as ASA Motion Link carry high-rate, mostly one-way video from cameras to processors. Automotive Ethernet is a general packet network, though the two are converging.
Automotive Ethernet carries networked packet data between control units. Automotive SerDes links are point-to-point and are mainly used for raw video.
The two terms
Automotive Ethernet
IEEE 802.3 variants designed for vehicles, using a single unshielded twisted pair with tight EMC limits to carry 10 Mbps to 10 Gbps between zonal controllers, sensors and infotainment systems.
SerDes
A chipset pair that converts wide parallel video or sensor data into one high-speed serial stream over a coax or shielded twisted pair and back again, carrying uncompressed video, a back-channel control link and power on the same cable.
